Spring home maintenance checklist for Edmonton

After the snow melts: water, drainage and the damage winter leaves behind. A practical checklist for April and May.

Move the water away from your house

Spring melt is when most Edmonton basements take on water.

  • Before the big melt, move snow piles at least a metre or two away from the foundation.
  • Clear the eavestroughs and make sure downspouts aren't blocked.
  • Add downspout extensions that carry water 1.5 to 2 metres from the house.
  • Check that the ground slopes away from the foundation. Fill low spots with soil.
  • Test your sump pump by pouring water into the pit. It should start on its own.
  • If you have a backwater valve, check it's clear and working.

EPCOR offers free flood-prevention home inspections. Outdoor inspections run from April to October.

Check for winter damage

  • Look at the roof for missing or lifted shingles, and the flashing around vents and the chimney.
  • Walk around the foundation and look for new cracks.
  • Check the siding, soffits and fascia for damage from ice and wind.
  • Look at the deck and fence for heaved posts or loose boards.

Outdoor taps and the yard

  • Turn on outdoor taps once the frost is gone. Look inside for any leaks around the pipe.
  • Rake the lawn and clear out leaves and debris from window wells.
  • Planning a fence, deck or garden? Request a free locate through Utility Safety Partners before you dig.

Inside the house

  • Change the furnace filter.
  • Book an air conditioner tune-up before the first hot spell.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and replace any past the date on the label.
  • Check under sinks and around the water heater for leaks.
  • Swap storm windows for screens and repair any tears.
